On Air
Vienna, Austria, 2023 Competition for Vienna Design Week

Collaboration withKatja Banović

‘‘ON AIR’’ is a fragment of travelling infrastructure. Whether on the move, or standing still, it offers Viennese collectives an unapologetic broadcasting platform. As a low-cost operator, digital radio is a medium celebrated for its ability to disperse real-time information to a wide and diverse audience.

As an addition to the 2023 edition of Vienna Design Week, ‘‘On Air’’ stands to allow various communities not only to join the social design discourse, but also guide it. Set up as a series of panels, podcasts, radio shows and performances, it gives an opportunity for a variety of topics to be discussed in an informal, impromptu and bottom-up way. With the help of various LGBTQIA+, Youth as well as cultural collectives, ‘‘On Air’’ hopes to add a layer of piracy into a well curated system.

As well as it’s networking and free-speech ambitions, the structure is a seeker, travelling to the inaccessible corners of Vienna in the hope of bringing them (back) on the map. Meaning, other than offering live broadcasts, the ‘‘On Air’’ program invites live audience to become a part of it’s shows, cultivating a new, larger collective.
