Open House is a proposal for a communal living room for Pitch Music & Arts Festival located in regional Victoria, Australia. As an image of the familiar it exists as a random object, whose volume and silhouette are telling of its domestic character. However, whilst the skeleton gives it away, the polycarbonate cladding, lack of doors and the soft net encompassing it, invite for a  closer examination.

Without doors, the house only has protruding window volumes and platforms. They are crawl spaces which act as rooms to the living space, offering moments to chill and rest.

The sand island in the middle opens to a multiplicity of uses. It divides the space, but it also connects it. Whether you want to sleep, dance or rest, all that is needed is to find a platform and enjoy the space.

We imagine the Open House as a gathering space with a changing narrative that sparks curiosity and excitement within the community. During the festival, the living room is a calm space where people come to take a break, enjoy an atmospheric setting or hang out with friends. But, on a chosen night, it changes character forming into a house party.

Open House for Pitch Music and Arts Festival 2024 was a house without a door. Visitors broke in through the windows to access the festival’s communal living room for a slice of home.

During the festival, it offered a space for people to appropriate. Protruding window volumes acted as rooms, benches nested within the main structure became private nooks and a sand island in the main living space offered a multiplicity of uses. So whether visitors were in the mood to sleep, dance, or just relax - they could find a window, claim their spot, and enjoy the space!

As a place for communal gathering, it was exciting to see the number of ways people made Open House come to life. From belly slides, dance jungles, charades and house parties - Open House became more than we could have imagined.
